 MEET DEBORAH SARGEANT

DEBORAH C. SARGEANT

Candidate for The Woodlands Township Board of Directors, Position 4

A resident of The Woodlands since 1995, Deborah Sargeant currently serves as president of the Grogan’s Mill Village Association. She perceives her participation and candidacy in the Township campaign as strictly a grass roots effort and a natural progression of her community service. Her election to The Woodlands Township Board of Directors in 2010 would be the culmination of a selfless volunteer’s long-time dedication to serving her neighbors, not special interests. Deborah and her late husband were homeowners here as far back as 1981. In 2002 she was elected to The Woodlands Community Association (WCA) board, representing the Village of Grogan’s Mill, The Woodlands’ original village. Later she became deeply involved in a group of resident and developer representatives that determines standards for residential and commercial developments throughout the 28,000 acres of The Woodlands, known as the Development Standards Committee. She became a familiar face at the Woodlands Community Association board meetings and even served the WCA as its vice president.

An added benefit of her service on The Woodlands Township Board would be the expertise she will provide as a financial professional. Our new government entity, a complex “Special District,” is still formulating its budgets, tax, and bond issues. Her “day job” finds her at Conquest Petroleum Incorporated in Spring, where she is the Corporate Controller.

On the business side of The Woodlands, she is a former small business owner who offered bookkeeping services to residents and other small businesses in The Woodlands.

Deborah envisions our community becoming an incorporated municipality, which will give it full ordinance-making authority, including land use planning, and the ability to control local law enforcement. She states that our current governance structure as a special district is not an efficient means of governing a community of our size and does not allow for the degree of local control that the residents deserve. If elected to the Township Board, she will do her utmost to ensure that its actions are consistent with the goal of permitting incorporation of our community at the earliest possible date. Her statements say that she recognizes “that it will take independent, accountable and balanced leadership to get us there.”

Her campaign treasurer is another community leader, Pat Goodpastor, also a Grogan’s Mill board member and past director of multiple community service organizations.

 TIME TO SERVE!

 A Pledge from Deborah Sargeant

As a resident of The Woodlands, I know you share my commitment to the future of our hometown. I have always been concerned about the balance between residential and commercial growth in our community. I believe there are workable solutions that will enable the development of commercial projects in a way that is harmonious with the preservation of the natural and peaceful character of our residential areas. I want to make sure we maintain the property values and our hometown vision. I pledge to be a voice for the residents, to protect the quality of life, and keep the hometown environment that all of us enjoy in The Woodlands.
